In the present highly competitive and
globalised world, studying textbooks alone has become incapable to help one
excel in his career. Indeed, more needs to be done and one of the most
effective ways is to explore, experience and get educated across the boundary
of our nation. Not only it will widen our view and perspective, it gives an
opportunity to the undergraduates to learn positive things and new concepts and
apply them along their career paths. As an exchange program is not readily
affordable by everyone, a short-term Study Trip will be a great alternative to
enable more undergraduates to receive essential international exposure.
With the generosity of Genting Group Bhd,
a public listed company in Malaysia, it is made possible that the
undergraduates of University of Malaya get to participate in the Study Trip for
free. This year, the Genting-UM 3E Study Trip visited China, which is a
developed country with a high-income economy. China is currently the world’s
second largest economy which contributed almost half of the global growth in
2013. Additionally, China happens to have great manufacturers and innovators
which contributed to the global markets and urbanization. The trip to China did
offer both cultural learning and a chance to indulge in unique business insights.
This time around, we managed to witness the two popular cities in China - Shanghai
and Hangzhou which are notably well-developed, prosperous, not to mention rich
in cultural and beauty of nature.
As
part of the itinerary in Shanghai, we visited one of the C9 universities (alliance
of nine elite universities), Shanghai Jiao Tong University. From there, the
undergraduates shared ideas and thoughts among one another. Undoubtedly, it was
an eye opener to us and the exposure will help us in our future career paths.
Hence, the program has helped provide a platform for us to learn from each
other by understanding each other's culture and thoughts. During the visit, we
maximized the opportunity to interact and exchange ideas, hence we conducted a
few activities. They included ice-breaking, presentation of different aspects
of each other's country, cultural performances and tour in the university.
Meanwhile,
we have also included the other details of the entire trip as part of the report
to facilitate you better understand the nature and purpose of our visit to
China. Shanghai is China's biggest city and the second largest “city proper” in
the world after Mumbai. As one of the world’s leading economic and business
cities, Shanghai's modernity is evidenced by the ambitious skyline in the
Pudong Economic Zone and the gorgeous night scenes of the Huangpu River.
Shanghai’s recognition as being named as the best city for US businesses
(ChinaDaily, USA) currently has over 700 local publicly-listed firms and
international corporations. It is also home to many small and medium
enterprise. On the other hand, Hangzhou, well known as “the city of silk” has
its main economic drive based on tourism. China National Tourism has ranked
Hangzhou as ‘China’s Best Tourist City’ and other organizations have labelled
it as ‘China’s Happiest City’ and ‘a Paradise for Tourism and Leisure. We
greatly appreciate the opportunity given by Genting Group Bhd to visit China
this year.
OBJECTIVES OF THE TRIP
i.
To interact with the undergraduates of the Shanghai Jiao Tong
University, exchange our thoughts and cultures and learn from one another.
ii.
To attain a wider understanding on how big corporations function as a
unit.
o
Our primarily focus would be to understand how the core business model
is being integrated into the company by exploring in detail the external
management and internal controls of the firm. Examples of external management
practices we would like to explore include customer relationship management,
dealings with suppliers and general branding. Whereas for internal controls, we
hope to learn the different type of internal controls implemented in the
financial aspect and its impact towards the business model.
iii.
To be exposed to the corporate environment, in particular, the
management field.
o
We aim to identify and cultivate the cultural differences that shape the
work ethics in China. We will then compare it alongside with Malaysia’s to
recognize major distinctions and provide recommendations based on our
discoveries.
iv.
To be the next generation of corporate leaders.
o
We wish to have a Q&A session with either the CEO, COO or CFO of the
company to learn on their journey in bringing the company to where it is today.
Questions will be sent to company upon approval of our application.
